Romney: Show taxes

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., weighed in this week on the importance of GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney releasing his income tax returns.

We wish Reid had restrained himself, as he made a nonpartisan issue appear partisan.

Reid’s outcries were predictable, but Republicans also are demanding that Romney be more open with the public.

“If you have things to hide, then maybe you’re doing things wrong,” Gov. Robert Bentley said last month. “I think you ought to be willing to release everything to the American people.”

Bentley backed down under GOP pressure, but not much.

“I believe in transparency, and that was the basis for my answer,” Bentley said. “I personally choose to release my own returns each year, and there was no effort to imply that Mr. Romney has anything to hide.”

Romney has stalled long enough. He needs to be open with the nation he hopes to lead.
