Staying home not an option

An odd verbal skirmish between Anne Romney, wife of likely GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, and Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen managed to miss the point.
The Democrat criticized Mitt Romney for holding his wife out as his source for information on women when she has “never worked a day in her life.”
It was a silly statement. As Anne Romney appropriately responded, “I made a choice to stay home and raise five boys. Believe me, it was hard work.”
Few Americans would fault Anne Romney for her decision to stay home with her children.
The problem is not that Anne Romney made a choice to stay home with her children, but that so few parents have that choice.
Her husband may be president one day. It is important that he understand that few families can afford to forego an income, especially if they want to live in a safe neighborhood and save money so their children have the option to attend college.
